There were few actors more quintessentially British than Peter Sellers, from his variety show background to his cut glass accent, from his breakthrough part in the cult comedy radio programme The Goon Show, and to his Saville Row suits and ties. Even though some of his major roles were as non-Brits: the hapless French police detective Inspector Clouseau of the Pink Panther films (much later ludicrously remade with Steve Martin in the title role), and the American president as well as German scientist in Dr Strangelove (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb), I still think that he epitomised British actors of his generation.

Except in conversation I keep calling him Peter Smith! Maybe the source of my confusion between the two names is that Peter Smith is even more British-sounding than Peter Sellers?
Whatever my difficulty in keeping his name clear in my mind, Peter Sellers has been a truly great and iconic British comedian and actor.
Most of the time when I was transferring a film that he was in from reel to video, I wouldn’t just check the buttons and levels and leave the machines to look after themselves. Instead, I would settle myself down in the most comfy chair in the studio, bring in some popcorn, chocolates and fizzy drinks, and prepare for a great couple of hours entertainment.
the greatest comedian of all?
I loved every film I saw him in. There’s the seldom seen nowadays The Magic Christian, in which he chucks money into a pile of manure and watches while everyone around piles in to grab some. Then he played the stereotypical union man in I’m All Right Jack, and he won an Oscar nomination for his late film Being There.
Some claim that Peter Sellers was the greatest comedian of all time. I think he was one of the greatest actors, funny or otherwise.
